Report: Japan wants to ban exports of more cars to Russia
TOKYO, Jul 18 (PRIME) -- Japan plans to ban exports of all hybrid and electric cars and cars with diesel and gasoline engines with displacement exceeding 1.9 liters, including used cars to Russia as a part of its sanctions connected to the conflict in Ukraine, Yomiuri daily reported on Tuesday.
The government should approve the new amendments to the sanctions in July so that they come in force in August, the daily reported.
The decision follows the restrictions that the U.S. and the E.U. approved earlier. Washington banned exports of all passenger cars to Russia in May, and the E.U. banned exports of cars with the engine displacement of more than 1.9 liters in June.
In April 2022, Japan banned exports of cars that cost more than 6 million Japanese yen.
According to the Japanese Finance Ministry, used cars accounted for about 25% of all cars exported to Russia in 2022. The Russian Federal Customs Service says that imports of used cars through Vladivostok hit a record in June with the Japanese cars accounting for about 80%.
